Default HP officejet 6500

as I said in anther post, I got a new computer, with windows 7. I am trying to install the software for the new printer. its an office jet 6500 by HP, and it wont install because it said "windows7 was an exepected OS" it wants XP or Vista and refuses to go further. Do I need a patch? am I out of luck till HP catches up. The front of the machine said "windows 7 ready!" sure, if I use the USB and plug it in, I can use it as a printer, but I want to be able to use the great software that is supposed to be part of the package.

I hate new computers. wow are they fun once they are set up, but getting them there...give me a break. I have had my oldie for a looooong time, and we finally broke down and got a new system. its gonna take days to catch up, and the new OS is tricking all my old stuff.

It does seem that w/Windows 7 the printer should be plug-n-play at this point. What I'd do is call the store and find out whether there's an updated driver or if there's a "patch."

Brand new 'puter? I'd expect nothing less than the baby to work right w/externals. Like you said, though... Probs. happen.

I'm not sure what generation of printer yours is - in the "grand scheme" of things. But I'm also not sure if older ones are forward compatible w/radio signals and stuff in newer 'puters. I've a new computer I'm set to set up to work wirelessly with a brand spankin' new HP printer. I predict, it will be a breeze, yet... if I try the wireless approach with, let's say, XP or VISTA on slightly older computers, it's gonna hit a glitch. I ran into that with trying to set MiFi; it worked perfectly from moment of install on the new 'puter but had nothing but probs. on a 'puter that's about 1.5 years old also w/VISTA O/S. (Despite what manufacuturers say and attempt, sometimes, the tech. just needs more time for sync'ing or catching up.)

Compatability could be a prob. You might find that you will have to work with USB for a time.

HP has a prompt Email service that we have used in the past.
Try emailing them. (the only problem is the English they use
is a bit rocky). They have answered us within a day!

Thanks!

HP emailed me back. Since windows 7 is a brand new OS, and my wireless printer/scanner/fax/copier is a brand new system, it may take a day or two for everyone to catch up. A software is going to be released and available from the website itself in a day or two. They will mail me the disc for Windows 7 as soon as its written, and released.

As with any new OS (operating system) it takes all the components a while to see the new guy as being safe.

Thanks for the help.
