Identification of Diagnostic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets for
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital are currently seeking
individuals with upper motor neuron disease (for example Primary Lateral
Sclerosis and Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia) for participation in a specimen
collection study, conducted by Merit E. Cudkowicz, MD.

The purpose of the research study is to compare biological markers in
the blood and spinal fluid of subjects with upper motor neuron diseases to
patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). We are looking for
differences
between the specimens of subjects with ALS to specimens from other neurological
disorders including pure upper motor neuron disease. We will also compare these
samples to healthy controls.

Enrollment for this study is currently underway. Participants must
be at least
20 years of age and will be asked brief questions about their past
and present
medical history, family history, and current medications.
Participants must
also be able to travel to either Massachusetts General Hospital or the
University of Pittsburgh to be included in this research study.
Researchers will
be happy to arrange appointments at the convenience of the study
participant.

Although there are no direct benefits for study participants, it is
hoped that
this study will produce information and data that ultimately could
offer benefit
to patients with ALS. All participants will be reimbursed $100.00
for their
participation.
