Default I just ripped my first DVD to my hard drive

Oh My god, this is the coolest thing. I have a HP Media Center so I should have learned this stuff along time ago, but I'm not one for watching dvd's because I never had a dvd player.

I would watch them on the DVD lightscribe thing on my computer. But that ceased to work recently.

I then went online and learned about dvd copying and dvd ripping. It's legal (at least I think it's legal), if you don't share the dvd and keep it on your hard drive after you buy it. It's like backing up your dvd.

So I went online, joined a dvd tech group and all of last night the guys were teaching me how to use the dvd ripper I downloaded.

Let me tell you. It took me a while to learn the ins and outs. But I successfully burned an older dvd of a movie I bought at a store.

However, it won't let me rip a dvd that Alan bought me.

So if anyone of you can figure out why it let's me rip some dvds, and not OTHERS (like the movie that Alan purchased for me), I would sure appreciate it.

I just want to watch this movie and until I get myself a stupid DVD player, this dvd is just sitting around.

Help please!!!

If you don't want to post about dvd ripping, just private message me.

Thanks much

Melody (besides being a sprouter, I am now a ripper), lol

I would think Avatar has anti-copying code on it.

Highly expensive movies, and those hoping to make mega $$
would put code on them to prevent copying.

That is why it plays on your player, and not the PC, I suspect.

Well, we went to the library yesterday and there was one Avatar disc to rent!

So I watched it today on our DVD player hooked to the TV.

When it was over, I tried it in the PC here in Windows Media player and all I got was a black screen.

Inside the holder for it is a sticker on the inner cover that says:
"This disc may not be compatible with your DVD player".

So I suspect it is designed to not play on computers after all.

The movie was very interesting... well done. I enjoyed the flying dragons, and the final war was "something else".

The plot was very formula, but the high tech stuff certainly concealed all that. I liked the concept of all living things sharing the energy ...because that is sort of how I feel about life myself. It must have been something in 3D and the big screen. Loud too, I bet. I would have been covering my ears!

Hubby has just told me that Avatar has cost 280 million dollars!
And it has grossed 2.5 BILLION so far! no chump change there!

There is a really good background video here:

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/avatar/

narrated by Sigourney Weaver and shows background and explanations that might be missed in the movie. The one that is best IMO is the 2nd of the 3 on that screen.

It is really beautiful IMO.

Yeah, that's what the guy in the computer store said. But this thing called DVD-fab is supposed to over-ride that protection.

Who cares!!! I ripped my first dvd.

lol

Oh thank you, I LOVE these kinds of things.

I had seen it when it first came out. I thought it was breathtaking, that's why I wanted the DVD.

Someday!!

Oh My Goodness. Brought me right back to when I first saw this fabulous film. It's like, if you are having a bad day, just pop this video in (that is if I had a dvd player, lol), and you can be in Pandora.

We should all have a Pandora in our lives.

Thanks SO much.

Really enjoyed the trailer. I had never seen it before and the colors!!! Oh My

You can download that trailer to keep you know....

Yes, I agree... it was a great escapist movie!

Hubby read a while back that the actors actually wore sensors and acted out many of the scenes! (That is how Gollum was done in The Lord of Rings trilogy). So they actually acted out physically some stuff, especially the facial expressions. So it was not pure 100% digital... the actors were involved quite a bit.

He claims 47hours of work for one second movie time! Lots and Lots of work and effort.

Yeah, I know about the sensors (a video of how they did this is probably somewhere on youtube). I saw it on a tv special some time ago. It was called "The making of Avatar". Well, you should have seen the suits they were wearing. Zoey Saldana was all covered in sensors and she was on this thing and it was supposed to be a beast and it was moving and she had to keep her balance.

But the coolest thing was the camera that James Cameron walked around carrying. When he looked at the camera he saw the shot like it would appear on the big screen (not blue screen, or sensors), but how it would turn out. He was walking around the sound stage carrying the camera ad saying 'look how cool this is, I can see what it will look like".

YOU GOTTA LOVE TECHNOLOGY.

Right now I'm watching Inception with Leonardo DeCaprio. And if you ever want to see a movie that will confuse the heck out of you, THAT'S THE MOVIE.

lol
