Default Work credits/Unemployment?

I know someone that just has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer(rectal, possibly lungs, kidneys, liver). He hasn't worked in the past 2 1/2 yrs but has collected unemployment over that time period. Does that count as work credits or how does that work? Would he qualify for SSDI if not SSI? I know he would have too wait 6 months before applying for benefits.

No work credits for unemployment. He needs 5 years of work in the last 10, so if he was working for the other 7 1/2 years in the last 10, then he should have more than enough.

He needs to file now. He may have to wait the waiting period before being paid, but he can file today and should file as soon as possible. Start online. This month.

I received my award letter in Oct. 2009 and it stated that my (work credit) coverage would expire 12-09 and my impairment began in 12-06 so thats only 3 yrs of work that I missed so how could the work credits expire if they are good to go for 5 out of the last 10 yrs? I was laid off for 6 months in 2001.

Were you under age 31 in 12/09? The work credit requirement is different if you are under 31.

I was 55. The person I know with the stage 4 cancer just turned 50 and like I said hasn't worked in 2 1/2 yrs so I guess he only qualifies for SSI.

he would still qualify for ssdi if he worked 5 out of the last ten years basically or 20 quarters out of a possible 40.
