Tongue Half of my face is numb...

About 3 weeks ago I had a very strange visual occurance...I became dizzy and my vision was distorted. Thankfully, I was at home at the time. I sat there trying to figure out what was happening, my head was moving very slowly and tilting to the right. I totally freaked out my husband...he didn't know what to do. After about 5 minutes is passed.

Three days later the right side of my face started to get numb & tingly...mainly around my lips, nose & cheek. After a few days it got worse and my gums, roof of my mouth, and throat also became numb. I don't have insurance so I went to a local clinic. The Dr. put me on a mid-dose blood pressure medication as the first step. It did not get better. My face is still numb. The Dr. is going to refer me to a neurologist.

Any ideas as to what this could be? I will accept any ideas and suggestions.

Thank you for listening.

Dianne

Hi, Diane, welcome to NeuroTalk!

Your symptoms sound similar to those of many neurological conditions. When you see the neurologist, I'm sure that some tests will be ordered to help determine the cause.

Feel free to jump in anywhere, you'll find that this is a very supportive and friendly community.

I have had trigeminal neuralgia for 10 yrs and mine began with numbness on one side of my face. I had had a viral throat infection and suddenly woke one morning(after the infection had cleared up) with my cheek, eyebrow, temple area numb. It lasted for more than a week, when that subsided then the neuralgia pain began. When the pain gets really bad I still get that tight skin/ tingling sensation. Wishing you the best with yours and hope it's nothing that can't be healed and taken care of quickly

Wow! I'm shocked & pleasantly surpised at how quickly you found my message. Thank you for your response. I'm hoping it's just a viral-related thing that can be easliy treated. I have had bad experiences in the past with full-body numbness, but the doctors were incapable of pinpointing a diagnose. I hope, without insurance, I can somehow get the proper care I need. Thanks again for your support! Dianne

Hello! Thank you for your quick response. I truly appreciate your time & concern...it really means a lot to me. Trigeminal neuralgia was what the Dr. at the clinic thought it might be, but I don't have a lot of pain. Occasionally, my face, or half of my face, feels like there are millions of tiny sharp needles traveling the course of my skin, but it eventually goes away. There is discomfort, not to mention annoyance, associated with whatever is happening. Hopefully, the tests won't cost much. I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks again!!!! Dianne

My face including gums and lips have been numb for several months. Have undergone several tests and endoscopic surgery for sinuitis. Still no relief

Have you considered Bell's Palsy? I awoke one morning to the whole right side of my face paralyzed. Luckily it only lasted about 3 weeks, but I still have increased hearing to the right ear and occasional facial twitching.
