Default Question re: Titrating "off" Medications

I have often questioned exactly what "abruptly" means other than NOT stopping a medication "cold turkey"...4-5 days....a week...10 days? Is there general criteria for titrating "off" a medication? Or, is there NO GENERAL criteria? Does it depend on the medication? I do believe that Doreen's terrible reaction to titrating "off" the Cogentin...withdrawal symptoms similar to detoxification of drug addicts...could very well have been related to the titration having been too abrupt; thus, this question.

Thank you for any input you may be able to provide.

Therese

Default This I do know

I do not know the answer to this question but I do know how painfully slowly we had to up the medication when John started on Requip.I can only imagine that you decrease the dose at the rate you introduced it unless of course it was slowly upped over years.

Default no "one size fits all" answer here......

your MDS should be able to advise you. The minimum time to my way of thinking is one week at each dosage, either going up or coming down.

I was having a lot of trouble w/ Requip and some googling revealed suggested titrating instructions. Definitely talk to a MDS.

Default ECD, Chasmo, rd42

Thank you for your responses.

ECD...yes...Doreen's neurologist believes in proceeding conservatively when prescribing "meds", and it is somewhat frustrating in that we tend to want to reach a point where the "med"does what it's supposed to do and we want to get there FAST!!!

Chasmo...yes...I have had a very strong feeling that 1 week would seem to be a reasonal time for effective titrating. I plan to pursue rd42's suggestion at the specific site that sites suggested titrating instructions...

and rd42...we will discuss this with Doreen's "neuro" at our next visit (early in November)...and thank you for the referral to "google" for suggested titrating instructions. I am very anxious to read this.

Again, thank you all so much...
