Smile Opinions/experience with chin straps while sleeping?

I'm thinking of using a chin strap to keep my mouth closed while I sleep, but there are a number of devices to pick from so I don't know where to start. I can't use an adhesive-based product (basically taping my mouth shut) because I get a rash from bandaids so I think I should stay away from this type. I figure I'm going to end up with an around-the-head model, but I don't know what type would be better for me. Wide straps? More straps? Fewer? Help! Opinions/experiences anyone? Thanks!

Default Chin strap

Are you waking the world up with your snoring, or do you get a sore throat from the throat breathing at noght?

Has your MD recommended this? Why not ask your dentist what he would suggest. And no...you do not want to put duct tape over your mouth, because if your nose stopped up....or you needed to call for help....etc.

Good luck.

This is a good question for the sleep apnea forum. As I have obstructive sleep apnea, I have some experience with chin straps used to prevent mouth leakage. I have used two different commercial varieties and do have a favorite. I've also tried Ace bandages and have had some success with that, except my wife says I look like a mummy. I've also used both a strap and a bandage together because a bandage wrapped over the chin strap from the forehead to the back of the head helps keep the chin strap (and my air mask) from moving when I sleep.

My favorite chin strap is the topaz, which you can see using the link below. I'm not recommending the vendor--I just Googled cpap chin straps to get an example picture for you.

A couple suggestions: Avoid wearing the strap too tightly. Most tend to pull your lower jaw backward and that can make your jaw sore, especially if the strap is too tight. If you have night time bruxism, you may want to invest in a bite guard. You get them from your dentist and wear them over your teeth to provide cushioning.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
