Default tired of commercialized Christmas {all holidays}??

I just can't seem to get in the mood for buying "things" this year.
Or even putting the decorations up inside the house.
I do like to get the lights up outside though, they are so pretty and they reflect in the pond.
And if we ever get some real snow it is really pretty reflecting on it.

Just wondering if anyone else is kind of in a ho hum mood about the holidays.

Red face been that way for a decade!

This year we are giving to charities for about 1/2 of our commitments.

I found some things for special people, on Ebay...and that was fun actually.

But you know if you live like we do all year, Christmas is just any other day.
We tend to be generous all the time. And you appear to be generous too. So it may be affecting you the same way.

http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Memo...pd_sim_v_img_1

Product Description
When Buddy (Eric Lloyd, The Santa Clause 3) is abandoned by his parents at the age of seven, he is dumped in the south at the small-town home of some older unmarried cousins. Without friends of his own age, Buddy develops a close friendship with one of the older, simpler ladies, Sook (Patty Duke, The Patty Duke Show) and the two undertake many adventures together. At Christmas time, they bake 31 fruit-cakes which they give as Christmas presents, even mailing them to President Roosevelt and Jean Harlowe! Although Buddy is eventually urged to move on with his life by his incessant cousin Jennie (Piper Laurie, Carrie), the memories of his friendship with Sook lives with him forever. Based on the original novel by Truman Capote, A Christmas Memory is a heartwarming story of love and friendship - and it is now available for the first time on DVD just in time for this holiday season.

I had spent many holiday seasons as you are feeling Jo. Finally, I decided on a way to re-frame (as much as possible) and told friends that I'd only accept gifts if they were home-made - easy things to do.

But, some are still insistent on buying. I'm adapting, and I do realize that all people are not comfy with the "basics"; it's so foreign to them.

I made most of the gifts I'm giving this year - as I've done for the past several years. It's harder when it comes to gift-giving for males (because some things are just too girly and I am not trying to push whatever on them).

I've felt a ton of stress this year, but that is solely because I got a late start; I usually begin in June to August.

I much prefer gifts people make, but I also know that I cannot impose my desires on others. Acceptance is the key.

I just watched "It's a Wonderful Life"
and caught a few other old traditional Christmas shows, so I'm getting out of the ho hum mode finally.

Jo,

Nice to hear you are getting in the mood. It took me a while to get things goin, but then seeing to look on our grandkids made up for it. They came over last night and decorated the tree.

Grin

I have heard of people who do a "make it or bake it" gift exchange when it gets to be sooooo many in the family. We don't exchange with any of our siblings (since they're all out of state it gets expensive mailing boxes). I just sigh when it was mid-October and I walk into our local Wal-Mart and see a big box of pumpkins beside the door...right beside the inflatable SANTA!!! What happened to Thanksgiving??? I know we give thanks each and every day of the yr, but it's becoming a lost holiday. I jokingly mentioned it to the greeter lady and her comment sent me into a roar..."well, Santa's bringing everyone pumpkin pies this year so that's why they displayed them side by side" !!!! LOL

Red face I'd like to add...

My birthday and Xmas fall close together.

My past includes alot of mental illness and some selfishness on the part of my parents and close family. As a child I was abused, and holidays were very painful for me.

They still are. I tend to withdraw during them, even now.
As a little girl, I saved my money to buy gifts for these heartless people.
I still remember how they were poorly and meanly received. Being made fun of on holidays, does not lend to
a positively memorable experience!

While my adult life is different, the old scars never really fade. I can enjoy some things, still, but others just throw me off kilter.

When I was younger-- in adulthood, we did traditional things in our family. I have found now that I am aging into the senior status, that old memories tend to come back and surface. Given the medical issues I deal with and the pain, and all the tasks in my profession, I just get TIRED now. And I admit it. Admitting it, helps you move past it. But the materialistic attitude we have today in US, is just appalling.
People rush around, fight in stores, to save a few bucks, and don't understand the meaning of GIVING, any more.
We all need to give, really give, in a meaningful way, IMO.
