Note Would Knowing Your Future Ruin Your Present?

Tuesday night, I had a doctor on from a company called Navigenics that has the ability to literally map your DNA.

Would Knowing Your Future Ruin Your Present?
Thursday, December 20, 2007

By Neil Cavuto

Your body blueprint, if you will.

Down to every possible thing that could go wrong with you. Cancer, at its earliest stages. Potential cardiovascular issues, long before they're issues.

Good to know, but scary too. Because this technology also can give you a pretty good idea what someday might kill you — even when.

Would you want to know that?

Imagine undergoing this test and finding you have the marker for Lou Gehrig's disease — always fatal.

What if you knew that ahead of time? That all this saving for your older years would be a waste? Would you live it up now or wallow now?

Some big ethical issues there — to say nothing of bosses and insurance companies. If they got wind that you might be pre-disposed to some bad health stuff, what do you think they'd do?

I worry about that. As I worry about looking into a crystal ball and potentially seeing how it's all going to end.

It's not that I don't want to know what's coming. I guess it's just that i don't want to take my focus off something else: Living.
