Unexpected Healthcare Allies

I spoke with a good friend tonight about healthcare. He works for a big savings & loan company (S & L) in Orange County, CA. He told me that the S&L industry is going to yeild a big hammer when it comes to universal healthcare. He sent me a graph to illustrate his point.

Here is why:
Even though insurance companies invest in Savings & Loans, the amount of money saved by individuals is still 25 times what the insurance companies invest! Hence, if people can be kept alive longer, then the S & L's will be able to generate more intrest money from their holdings. The amount that they stand to make on long-lived clients is in the BILLIONS of dollars. Therefore, they want you to live as long as possible so that they can use your money to loan other folks and then reap the intrest payments.

Universal healthcare increases the chances of people living longer and saving longer...

So, this means if we get universal healthcare the S&L will benefit as well? Well hot diggity dog! It's nice to hear we can potentially put an end to big insurance companies who refuse to cover someone due to pre-existing conditions.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Of course, they're banking (pardon the pun) that Universal Health Care will cause people to live longer..

If it's anything like Canada, you could die waiting to see a Doctor.

Sandy - Yes, that is what it means! WoooHooo!!!

Sally - They are in the business of minimizing risk and maximizing profits, and if their savers/investors can all receive medical care on an equal basis, it is fair to assume that more of them will (a) live longer/save longer, and (b) become savors/investors when they would otherwise have to spend the money on health insurance.

It makes sense to me.

I honestly don't think universal healthcare is a bad thing. I already have military insurance which is darn near close to universal healthcare. The only people I have to take a backseat to is soldiers. I can't and wont complain to that. Sure, we have options on which level of insurance we want but I chose prime and see in network doctors to save on the deductibles and out of pocket cost. We are one of the lucky ones in that Jim's retirement will cover me to death.

I wonder if universal healthcare will affect the companies that Tricare contracts with? The companies I have been through are Humana, Blue Cross and now Healthnet Federal Services. I bet if universal healthcare takes over those companies can kiss the military contracts goodbye as well.

I also wonder about Medicare and the need for supplemental policies? Will universal healthcare eliminate the need for these too? Wow, all the possibilities!

Sandy,

It seems that the plan the will be pushed by S & L's, banks, etc. will be the same plan that Congress uses. I think that if anything, it will be an improvement on what is being offered to vets & their families.

This is going to be fun to watch!

I would love to be able to save 25k per year rather than continue spending it on insurance and deductables for my family.
