Shared history of Parkinson's patients has researchers looking for answers

Clusters of Parkinson's disease patients with similar past jobs and addresses have drawn the attention of researchers at Wilfrid Laurier University probing the mysteries of the degenerative disorder.

Staff at Laurier's Movement Disorders Research Centre are wondering why so many local cases they study involve former nurses, welders, dye handlers and firefighters.

The centre's director, Dr. Quincy Almeida, told an audience of patients and neuropsychologists yesterday that patterns around where those patients have lived are also emerging.

"I've literally pushed pins into a map, and I've found clusters," he said.

Among the geographical clusters his centre has identified are addresses along the Grand River and homes built above old garbage dumps and industrial sites on Kitchener's west side.
