Arrow FDA Hid Names of Melamine Contaminated Infant Formula Products from the Public

FDA Hid Names of Melamine Contaminated Infant Formula Products from the Public http://www.naturalnews.com/News_0005...rmula_FDA.html

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, November 27, 2008
Key concepts: Melamine, Infant formula and FDA

When the FDA discovered melamine in U.S. infant formula products, it made a conscious decision to withhold that information from the public. Instead, it called a teleconference with the infant formula manufacturers to warn them about its findings!

The truth about the melamine only became public after the Associated Press filed a Freedom of Information Act request, demanding the test results from the FDA. Absent that request, this whole issue would have continued to remain an FDA secret.

In the aftermath of that decision, the FDA is now under intense fire for once again betraying the public trust and acting to protect the interests of corporations rather than the people. Congress, public health groups and consumer advocate (like me) are blasting the FDA for utterly disregarding public safety and catering (once again) to the financial interests of the companies it regulates.

The FDA, of course, claims that low levels of melamine are perfectly safe for babies to consume in unlimited quantity. Sure they are! And Bisphenol-A is safe, too. So is aspartame, sodium nitrite, sucralose, MSG and every other food ingredient poison you can think of. According to the FDA, they're all safe for babies to eat or drink in virtually unlimited quantities.

Needless to say, the FDA has become the laughing stock of all intelligent observers. It's not hard to figure out that the FDA has sold out to Big Business and betrayed the people, thrusting defenseless babies directly into the line of fire of dangerous chemicals and toxic additives.

Yet the FDA still conspires to hide the truth about these dangers from the public.

Truth be told, it is the FDA that has become the real danger to the public. This agency is a complete failure. Its leaders should resign in disgrace... or, more accurately, they should be arrested and prosecuted for their roles in a deadly conspiracy involving food and drug companies that sought to boost business profits at the expense of human lives.

This is all about much more than mere melamine, of course. If the FDA would consciously hide the truth about melamine from the public it was supposed to serve, then what else might it hide in the future? (What has it been hiding already?)

The bottom line is that the FDA cannot be trusted, and rather than ruling by trusted authority, it rules by intimidation and oppression, even with its own scientists (http://www.naturalnews.com/News_000542_...).
___________

The FDA found melamine and cyanuric acid, a related chemical, in samples of baby formula made by major U.S. manufacturers. Melamine can cause kidney and bladder stones and, in worst cases, kidney failure and death. If melamine and cyanuric acid combine, they can form round yellow crystals that can also damage kidneys and destroy renal function.

Melamine was found in Good Start Supreme Infant Formula With Iron made by Nestle, and cyanuric acid was detected in Enfamil Lipil With Iron infant formula powder made by Mead Johnson. A spokesman for Nestle did not respond to repeated calls and e-mails for comment yesterday.

Gail Wood, a spokeswoman for Mead Johnson, said the company does not think that cyanuric acid poses a health threat to infants. "Cyanuric acid is approved by the FDA to sanitize processing equipment," she said. "The risks of not sanitizing equipment are far greater than ultra trace amounts of residual cyanuric acid found in the formula."

The FDA has been testing hundreds of food products for melamine in the aftermath of a scandal this year involving Chinese infant formula tainted with melamine. Chinese manufacturers deliberately added the chemical to watered-down formula to make it appear to contain higher levels of protein. More than 50,000 Asian infants were hospitalized, and at least four died.

Arrow What is melamine?

Melamine
Melamine is an organic compound that is often combined with formaldehyde to produce melaminemelaminemelamine resin, a synthetic polymer which is fire resistant and heat tolerant. MelamineMelamineMelamine resin is a very versatile material with a highly stable structure. Uses for melaminemelaminemelamine include whiteboards, floor tiles, kitchenware, fire retardant fabrics, and commercial filters. MelamineMelamineMelamine can be easily molded while warm, but will set into a fixed form. This property makes it ideally suited to certain industrial applications.

MelamineMelamineMelamine resin is manufactured by mixing urea with formaldehyde under heat and pressure. The substances begin to polymerize and are forced into a mold which will create the desired shape. Under pressure, melaminemelaminemelamine releases water, which could make the plastic unstable if it is not removed. The materials finish polymerizing and create a finished product, melaminemelaminemelamine resin.

MelamineMelamineMelamine resin is known as a thermoset plastic, because the plastic is fixed after molding. If exposed to enough heat, melaminemelaminemelamine will melt. For this reason, melaminemelaminemelamine dishware should not be exposed to high temperatures like those in the oven and microwave. However, the plastic is able to withstand higher temperatures than other plastics. Because it is a thermoset plastic, melaminemelaminemelamine resin is difficult to recycle.

MelamineMelamineMelamine can be made into a foam product. MelamineMelamineMelamine foam has a distinctive structure composed of stacked bubble shapes, which are extremely hard and therefore can easily clean a wide variety of substances. MelamineMelamineMelamine foam is marketed under a variety of commercial names including Magic Eraser, a cleaning tool well known for removing scuffs and dirt from a wide range of surfaces.

MelamineMelamineMelamine resin is used in Formica and similar construction products made from composite materials. Formica is made using melaminemelaminemelamine resin, which is used to coat the fibers in the upper layer of the construction product. The melaminemelaminemelamine resin makes the end result heat resistant, so that hot objects can be set on the counter without concern. The surface of the material is designed to be easily wiped and cleaned, creating a long lived household product.

MelamineMelamineMelamine also plays a role in a wide range of flame resistant materials. These include textiles used in upholstery and the uniforms worn by firemen. Thermal liners, heat resistant gloves, and aprons to protect from splashback of hot substances are made using melaminemelaminemelamine. MelamineMelamineMelamine will protect a wearer from heat hazards, and will help to resist the spread of fire in aircraft and buses by providing a fire blocker.

MelamineMelamineMelamine is also used in the manufacture of some filters. The material is porous and will admit substances to pass through, but can be used to filter out particles of a particular size. MelamineMelamineMelamine filters are capable of handling a high capacity and can be used in hot environments due to the heat resistance of melaminemelaminemelamine. MelamineMelamineMelamine filters are also extremely efficient.

Aside from common commercial uses, melaminemelaminemelamine became a topic of much discussion in early 2007, when veterinary scientists determined it to be the cause of hundreds of pet deaths, because of pet food contamination. Prior to these reports, melaminemelaminemelamine had been regarded as non-toxic or minimally toxic. However, because of the unexplained presence of melaminemelaminemelamine in wheat gluten added to mass-produced dog and cat foods, it is the most likely cause. Pet owners report symptoms that are commonly associated with renal failure, which could be explained by the ammonia that may result from the digestion of the melaminemelaminemelamine.

Arrow foods contaminated by melamine

Before you check out the following items, please click here first to grab the Sciencebase newsfeed. I’ll be updating the melamine news over the next few days, and the RSS newsfeed system allows you to keep up to date with the Sciencebase site without having to check back by adding our headlines to your Google account, My Yahoo, Bloglines or your active bookmarks in your browser.

As the melamine in milk products from China problem continues to grow apace, Sciencebase presents a succinct list of melamine contaminated food list culled from the most recent news results on the subject. This is by no means an exhaustive list nor is it a condemnation of any particular products, it’s here merely to raise awareness of what is happening with regard to the melamine in milk scandal.
Powdered baby milk.
HK finds melamine in Chinese-made cheesecake.
Cookies With Melamine Found in Netherlands.
Mr Brown coffee products.
Manufacturing giant Unilever recalls melamine tainted tea. CNN is also reporting that the Hong Kong authorities Sunday (October 5) announced that two recalled candy products made by British confectioner Cadbury had high levels of melamine.
Melamine Detected in Two More Ritz Snacks.
More Chinese-made sweets recalled in Japan.
White Rabbit brand Chinese candy contaminated: Asian health officials.
Lipton, Glico and Ritz the latest businesses to be affected by milk powder scandal.
Hong Kong finds traces of melamine in Cadbury products.
Recalled Melamine Milk Products include Asian versions of Bairong grape cream crackers, Dove chocolate, Dreyers cake mix, Dutch Lady candy, First Choice crackers, Kraft Oreo wafer sticks, M&Ms, Magnum ice cream, Mentos bottle yoghurt, Snickers funsize, Yili hi-cal milk, Youcan sesame snacks and others. Testing of some of those has already proven negative.
Melamine Found in More China-Made Products, including Heinz DHA+AA baby cereal.
305 Chinese dairy-based products temporarily banned in Korea.
US bloggers have gone so far as to uncover dozens of products recalled in China that were still on the shelves of their local supermarkets.
31 new milk powder brands found tainted.

Just for the record, this is not, as was suggested on a couple of blogs linking here, a definitive, complete list.

I will update it as and when new information comes to light. Check out the previous posts for more information in the background to this news story and for further discussion on the issues surrounding the melamine in milk products scandal: Melamine Scandal Widens and (2008-09-29) Milky Melamine.

Thank you for all the info. I was going to buy a large amount of powdered milk online, but I better stick with the original stuff.

There are clinical trials testing synthetic blood, and the FDA allowed them to continue despite many deaths. They are in hot water about that, too.

Maybe the Obama administration will reform the whole system.

It's very disturbing to me.

Oh, geez this post is number 666! Maybe the FDA is the devil's son.
