For the third year in a row, your favorite folkies are stripping down for a good cause. Once expenses are covered, the profits from Media-based photographer Jayne Toohey's Naked Folk calendar will go to a fund to help musicians cover health insurance.

it's a cause close to her heart; don't get her started on the perils of back injury for a photographer. "I'm a working artist, and I can't afford health insurance." She states, "My hope is that someday there will be universal health care, but until that time I'm hoping to be there for people." Toohey is studying the options with the North American Folk and Dance Alliance and Local 1000 of the American Federation of Musicians.
Toohey offers L.A. duo Lowen & Navarro, part of the 2007 calendar, as an example of the urgency of health insurance. Together for two decades, they've had to readjust their touring to accommodate a wheelchair. Eric Lowen now suffers from Lou Gehrig's Disease, but looks sassy in his all-terrain wheelchair. Disability activists will be delighted to see him claiming his right to be part of the fun.

Among the locals, John Flynn shows off what an hour of running daily can do for you. "[He] was shy," recalls Toohey. "We've discussed this since the first one. It took three years till he finally got the nerve. His family thought it was funny, this shot of dad out back splitting wood." And yes, Kate Gaffney was down to nothing, outside her family's Jersey Shore condo. "I kept having to throw her a sweater, cause people would come walking down the beach," says Toohey. "We really had fun with that shot."

Calendar signing with photographer Jayne Toohey, Sat., Dec. 9, 5-9 p.m., Earth & State, 23 W. State St., Media, 610-566-9270, www.mediaartscouncil.org, www.nakedfolkcalendar.com.
