Default Help! Super slow DSL

I'd drop kick this thing into the next decade but I'm not sure what to kick, and I'd probably break my foot trying.

All of our computers are super, super slow. We pay for DSL but what I'm getting right now is slower than dial up. What is wrong? Do I need to make a phone call or replace something?

All computers have current anti-virus protection. I dumped a bunch of no longer used programs off the kids computers. (It was stuff on discs they no longer play.) Email has been "checking" for 10 minutes now and still no new stuff. I know there is new mail waiting for me. I'm on DH's computer not my usual kid one.

I plan to start up a business online in the next few months. I can't do that with this slow an internet. Help before I lose what little bit is left on my sanity! Thanks.

Mine has been a bit sluggish this last week also.

Here's a couple of speed testers-
http://myspeed.visualware.com/
http://www.speedtest.net/
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

on the first link this was my results-
Download speed 475 Kbps
Upload speed 100 Kbps
D/load QOS 66 %
U/load QOS 87 %
RTT 162 ms
Max Delay 196 ms
Avg Delay 24 ms
Max Bandwidth 736 Kbps
Route Speed 3236 Kbps
Forced Idle 0 %
Route Conc 1.5

some of it could be kids out of school, unemployed workers - the more people using slows everything down.

but that shouldn't affect getting email unless it's timing out before connecting to email server?

Could the email have gone to a spam or junk folder?

sometimes I do a test by sending an email to myself from one address to another one- to see how long it takes..

If it is the actual dsl that is slow then not much you can do for that, but if the computer has some slowness you can do tune up stuff for that.

I would be interested in what your test numbers come up as - to compare with mine..

Knocks on some wood...

For now things seem to be much better. I left after posting my gripe and shut everything down including the router. The router rarely gets shut down. When I tried again in the afternoon things started out great then got sluggish. Not as bad as before but slowed down some. For now things are great. Maybe shutting down the router did the trick. Man I hope so! This morning a snail could've moved faster than this paperweight did. Sheesh!

Jo*mar I've used speakeasy before. I'll post the results here if things get bad again soon. I fear they will. I'll try the one you use to get the best comparision.

Thanks.

Hmm maybe I'll do a modem/router reboot in the morning, couldn't hurt to try it.

I had a similar problem but looking at different web sites I realized that if I increase RAM (random access memory) it might solve the problem. I bought a card of extra memory --slotted it in and --hey presto --speedy PC once again-- I am almost a PC dummy ,not one of the experienced ones

When things get real slow like that the first thing to do is a reboot of the modem, router, and computer. If that doesnt get results then wait a little while because it could be that they are working on something somewhere, and it will get better in a little while.

If it doesnt get better, well then it is time to find out if it is some kind of hardware problem. I would bet a reboot would probably fix it though if everything has been running fine,

You might do all the cleaning and defrag while your slow

Hope everything gets up to speed soon and it is nothing serious.
