Missing The Diagnosis:The Hidden Medical Causes of Mental Disorders by William Matteson, Ph.D.
http://www.continuingedcourses.net/a.../course067.php I was encouraged to see this! Thanks to Physicians and Mental Health Professionals who have learned this type of approach. They have made such an enormous difference in the wellbeing of the patients seeking help. Investigating the possibility of other causes, rather than just writing prescriptions for initial symptoms.

Thanks Chemar. With my day job hat on, what Dr Matteson has described is all good science.
I am not sure if my story is relevant but I have a strong family history of insidious Major Depressive Disorder. When I decided to do something about mine I went IP and had a very detailed physical examination, including many of the things that Dr Matteson described - nothing of concern emerged. Initially I was prescribed an antidepressant and my clinical psychologist used an eclectic approach with me - a combination of CBT, mindfulness and schema therapy. After a while she told me that she thought that I could discontinue the antidepressant which I did, after getting approval from my psychiatrist of course. She told me that I now have what she calls a "toolkit". What that means is that if I notice that something is not right I can choose a tool from it (usually a CBT method) which puts things right. This works for me.
