Default Meds stopped working - Can Effexor help?

Hello all.

I had been on Cymbalta + Lamictal and Seroquel for five years and it had helped me with a depression that was caused by chemical imbalance.
Then after years with these meds, they stopped working.

Last year I started to get so depressed again that it came to the point where I can't get out of bed on most days.

I'm in a Partial Hospitalization Program at the moment and two months ago, they've put me on Wellbutrin and Latuda (and took me off the meds that didn't work anymore) - without any success... the depression, fatigue and emotional numbness are still here.

Now they added Effexor to my meds and I'm now taking this following combination: 150 mg Wellbutrin + 150 mg Effexor in the morning, and 120 mg Latuda at night.

It's been 10 days with the Effexor and nothing has changed. It is probably too early to tell, right?
But I'm having real problems getting through each day as I feel completely empty and depleted.... This depression now lasts for one year and I am losing my hope.

Has anyone ever tried Effexor and what was the outcome?
Thank you.

Hi, there is a simple test your doctor can do. All they do is a mouth swab and send it to the lab, the report they get back tells them, based on your DNA, what meds will work for you (green), what meds may work (yellow), and what meds won't work at all (red). I had been on Celexa for years and found out it is a "red" med for me last summer. Who knew, lol. But I started Effexor "green" at that time and it is working well with minimal side effects. The test is called Genosight, if I remember correctly.

Hi Junee78

I have been on Effexor XR (150 mg/day) for some years - it has helped with my clinical depression though it took about a month to kick in fully.

In my experience a combination of medication and non-pharmaceutical approaches (notably Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; CBT) has been more effective than either has been in isolation.

Finding a clinical psychologist who has experience with using CBT with his/her clients is a plan which is worth considering.

All the best.

Hi, I had a 10 yr depression and was on a cocktail of various anti depressant drugs back starting in 1991 to 2002 when I finally got on desiccated thyroid support.

I had thought back 1991 it was sluggish thyroid but the MD I was seeing didn't know enough to put me on at least a theraputic dose of thyroid support. He knew little and I knew nothing back then.

Then I went to work and talked to many, joined support groups for thyroid help.

Long long story and many years of meds that didn't bring me out of "clinical" depression...than in 2002, my D.O. called in for armour and those years of depression lifted. And then in 2006, a lowness it me and that's when I found out about the Vit D deficiency and boy was I deficient. Lots of history and misery all those years.

Depression is huge with dsyfunctional thyroid. Here is a recent post I made here.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread230559.html

So for me depression went bye bye with thyroid support and Vit D. No A/D's since 2002.
