Default My son is suffering from multiple concussions.

I am searching for help and answers. My son is only 14 and has suffered from over 5 concussions in the last 3 years. Once he got the first one, he was fine for a year or so. Then he would barely get hit and he would get another one. He was a very successful ice hockey player and had big dreams. We no longer allow him to play any contact sports so he is suffering from the antsy sydrome of wanting to do what he loves to do. But he constantly has headaches.
He missed his second semester of his freshman yr of high school and has just started back for his 10th grade year. He is struggling with headaches and concentration. I don't want to pull him out of school again, but I feel like I may need to. It will put him in a state of depression which couldn't be good for him either. Please help me. He seems to be getting worse with the headaches since he started school. I don't know what to do. Signed, saddened and frustrated Mom.

Dear Mom- we are also dealing with all that you have described. our son is 18 and in senior year. He has missed the 1st 3 weeks of school - he has too much anxiety and gets migraines during the classroom setting. We just went to a concussion specialist yesterday and gave us some light and direction to what our path should be.
1st- every time they get migraines, that is a sign that your sons brain cannot handle what it is being exposed too. So you must remove the stimulation that is causing the migraines...that includes school. the brain cannot heal and will take longer to heal if you keep him in this enviroment.
2nd- rest is key...this is by far the most difficult!!! Keep him unplugged, from the direction of the dr. he can be on computer, tv, etc for 10 min and then has to walk away for an extended time.
3rd- we are going to try and have him go to the 1st 2 periods of school next week, we shall see if he is up for this.
I hope this helps, but really is important he rests his brain.
