I was fused L4 L5 in 1995. Removed hardware and added fusion at L3 L4 in 2013. He also said that he thought L5 and S1 were auto-fused in 2013. Well here we are with ongoing back pain, burning right thigh, foot and toe pain with occasional electric shock pain into toes and throw in testicular pain at times.
PM doc referred me to a top surgeon in the state who just told me that previous fusions have left me with a straight back Sagittal Imbalance. He wants to undo previous fusions by cutting/sawing and fuse L3 to S1 and give me back a curve to my lower spine. WOW!!! Has anyone else dealt with this. He said that it is common and will continue to deteriorate if not addressed. I expected him to want to clean up my blown disc between L5 and S1 that I am sure is causing a lot of my pain, but this is major to say the least. Any comments with past history would be helpful. |

Yes I had exactly what your talking about. My Doc called condition Flat Back Syndrome. You should look it up. The procedure I had is called an Osteotomy.
They removed all old hardware, put a wedge in disk L3, and fused me from T-12 to S-1. I won't lie to you, the surgery was HERENDOUS but it gave me my life back. I was pretty much a cripple by the time I had it done. I hate to tell you this, but you will only get worse if you don't get it fixed. Did they use a Harrington Rod with your first surgery? They believe that is what caused my flat back. As I said the surgery sucked big time, but if it would get rid of my neuropathy I would do it every year. I had mine done in 2006 and I can tell you that my back has been a non issue ever since. Your in luck to have one of the best surgeons because your going to need one. I wish you the best of luck. |
