Teeth Back from NH :)

I had sooooo much fun!!!!! It was nice and cool up there, and thankfully we got back down here as it the cooling trend is starting. But the grandbabies... ah the grandbabies... They were a riot up there. They pretty much devoured my aunt's garden and it's not a small garden either. Every single day they wanted to go out and pick things from the garden and only a bit of what they picked made it into the basket for dinner. They were even munching on raw zucchini. I mean I love zucchini, I really really do, but even I can't handle it completely raw. The GB's though had no problem.

My grandson put on over 8lbs in the 2 weeks we were up there and actually grew an inch taller . Which is really sad since it shows how malnourished he was . That a simple daily multi-vitamin and 6 small meals a day led to such growth. And while some might say "well it was just a growth spurt" but his little arms filled out, his knees have flesh on them once more so they don't look so knobby, his chest filled out and I even had to let his pants out. Don't get me wrong either, he still looks about half starved, but compared to 3 weeks ago when he first came down to GA, he looks a million times better. He actually has to take a deep breath in for you to see his ribs now, where before you could simply count them just lifting up his shirt.

But beyond all that, it was just amazing to watch the kids go crazy in the countryside. Just what they desperately needed I think, a chance to just go wild. My granddaughter even got her very first pony ride at the country fair we went to for her birthday, and while she liked the pony, she really wanted to ride the huge draft horses that were showing for pulling. Not one ounce of fear over the animals dwarfing her completely, she just wanted to ride them and settled for getting to pet them, unlike her brother who was a little bit nervous about them.

We all also got to enjoy swimming in the brook behind my aunt's house, even though the water was FREEZING, it was too much fun and honestly felt great after sweltering in GA for so long. We also hiked a mountain... well okay we went up Mt. Keresage that lets you drive pretty close to the summit, and from there walked half a mile up to the summit. But for an MS patient, a 3 year old and a 4 year old, that was quite an accomplishment.

We made it to the fabric store I was dying to go to, and spent far more than we should have but got far more than we ever would have anywhere else. The kids will have clothes aplenty this winter for preschool... And we made it to a few book stores so the kids got plenty of reading materials, along with a stop off at the famous Granite State Candy Shoppe. Talk about some well behaved children, they completely belied being like a kid in a candy shop, as I think they were just too bewildered by aaaalllll the candy!!!! They were even quiet on the way back to the car as if neither of them believe where they had just been, they didn't even ask for any of their candy and had to be reminded when we got home that they had candy. And the look on both of their faces.... It was priceless, it was one of those.. "My god it wasn't a dream!" type of looks.

It was just such a great trip, and my aunt was AMAZING with the kids, she is a kindergarten teacher of course, but she was very helpful in keeping the grandson under control when he hadn't had many rules. She did really good in helping him adjust to a world with rules and just made the whole transition so much easier. I mean the kids were still kids and got into things they weren't supposed to, fought like siblings do, had their overwrought meltdowns, but all together I can't wait to bring them to NH again next year and do it all over again. Because the really sad thing, is all the kids had for toys up there was 2 beach balls, and a teddy bear each, and they didn't care in the slightest! Because they had a field of flowe

4s and tall grasses to make their own toys with, a huge lawn to just run around and do sommersaults on, a badly out of tune piano to make their own music with and nothing else to get in the way of their imaginations.

It's just too bad that GA is too hot and I have to watch out carefully for venomous snakes and spiders in my yard, to let the kids run free down here. Which isn't to say there aren't venomous snakes in NH, but even in the country they're extremely rare to see, you have to go like deep backwoods hiking to even hope to get a glimpse of a timber rattler which has one of the least potent venoms of the rattlesnake family. And you might... just might during a really really hot summer and further south in NH than my aunt lives, you could come across a water moccasin... it's highly unlikely, but it is possible. All the other snakes are black racers which are territorial and do bite with a vengeance just not venom and a variety of completely harmless garden snakes. No black widows, no banana spiders, no recluses... really nothing at all aside from ticks carrying lyme disease to be worried about. That's the biggest danger playing outsider there.

So glad you had a wonderful time. Brought back a lot of memories of us taking our yearly vacation up to Minnesota. Of course we had a garden but it was eaten at the table with Grandma's wonderful cooking. They had a large chicken farm and it ws not picked by any machines. I don't know how Grandma did it without all our help. Glad the little one put on some weight. I don't remember if you said how old he is.

My GD just turned 3 while we were up there and my GS is 4 until this December we're hoping to get both of them enrolled in preschool now that we're back. Or rather pre-k for the GS and preschool for the GD. It'll also help a lot for me in watching the two as there will be at least 6 hours out of the day that I know I'm in the clear barring illness.

Sounds like an awesome trip!!! I loved reading your post. It reminded me of running around free like that. I wish I could do that now. It's way too hot out to be running around free and wild like that.

I am glad the trip turned out so well for your GS. I know you were worried about it and him. I am also glad he put a little meat on his bones while he was there. I think this was a life changing trip for him and will, hopefully, only improve from here.

Starz, are you getting any rain from the tropical storms? It looked like extreme SW Georgia was getting hit pretty hard.

Stay safe!!

Storm wasn't too bad here, but on the east coast so it slowed and downgraded quickly after hitting land in the west. A few trees down, and a bit of rain but really not much worse than any bad rain storm that might pass through here. But still glad we had a full tank of gas, a bag of juice and snacks for the kids and change of clothes packed and ready just in case. DH also made sure that he had the chainsaw handy as yet another precaution. And it all came to naught . Which is all one can hope for...hoping everyone weathered as well.

Not sick per say, but came back from a 10 month stint with his father looking like a starving child from Ethiopia. He honestly could have been a poster child for the Feed The Children ads. You could count all his ribs just by lifting his shirt, his chest was sunken, cheeks hollow, could easily see his collarbone, no real "flesh" on his arms or legs, just disgustingly skinny and half starved. it's only been about a month since and with 6 small meals a day he has put on considerable weight, grown a bit taller, and now has the energy of about 5 four year old little boys rather than the one that he is.

He wasn't just starved of food, but of rules and attention given how he acts. It's downright criminal and I hope my daughter listened and documented his condition so that she can keep him from returning to such an environment. He's going to the doctor Monday, now that he has a few good meals under his belt just to make sure no harm was done in the 10 months of neglect.

that is just a crying shame.
i too hope pictures were taken and dr's notes copied.
i also hope she takes legal steps to gain sole custody.

what a shame to treat a little child that way.
i'm praying for him.

That was one of the other things that made the NH trip so important for us to go on. Not only is my aunt a grade school teacher of near 30 years now, but her husband is also a lawyer for child and family service up there. My other uncle who we went to visit while up there is a recently retired school OT specialist and he brought along my 2nd cousin Linda had worked as a pediatric nutritionalist for 20 years. My uncle's husband only worked for insurance companies and has limited experience with kids but did great keeping them entertained while the rest of us talked shop about the GS and even the GD who had heart surgery when she was about 6 months old to repair some holes congenital holes in her heart.

Census from all was a case of pure neglect. GS showed willingness to try a large variety of foods, was very concerned about when the next meal would be before deciding he was finished with whatever he was eating, responded quickly to any correction in his behavior... Too quickly for a 4 yr old child, and while it would be here say in court there was always a flash of fear and flinch when first corrected which means he was probably physically reprimanded as his sole discipline when with his father.

But while there are no blood ties between my family and the grandbabies, everyone has offered to submit a written testimony should it be required by the courts, including my uncle's husband as in entertaining the kids the GS said he loved Nama because she didn't spank him as much as daddy does, and she has lots and lots and lots of food! As he listed off the 6 small meals: breakfast then a snack then we still get lunch and when the GD wakes up we get ANOTHER snack then we have dinner and even after dinner we get dessert!

No 4 year old should be shocked by that kind of feed schedule... That's just what they need at that age and really should be the norm till they're in highschool... Best if they keep it for life but at his age it's simply what is required for healthy growth. And he wasn't given chips and ice cream or cookies, it was all REAL food, carrots and cereal (without sugar added ) fruits and nuts, baby greens I mean real food that was unprocessed went to the table as it came from the farm pretty much.
