It isn't about being "one of those junkies".
Everyone who uses opiates for any length of time becomes addicted to them and there are good pain specialists and bad just like anything else.
If you have chronic pain and aren't able to find relief in antidepressant medication, therapy, things like biofeedback, PT, exercise etc. than you would likely benefit from having someone assist you to manage your pain with medication.
Good luck at the PCP. I'm sure they can help you with the GI stuff anyway.
