Default New Posts verses Today's Posts

If not logged in, you have "Today's Posts" available.

If logged in, you have "New Posts" available.

Why are they so different?

Sometimes I have to log out and view "Today's Posts" to find a thread and then log back in.

Where do they "go" once you have viewed them? How do you find a "read" post?

I am still learning my way around as Neurotalk is the only forum I have ever used.

I understand the movement of posts after you have viewed them and the message of whether they have been updated or not, but sometimes I can not find them at all unless I log out and go backward in time.

PS I have read the FAQ but still have some confusion.
