This location that hubby's family chose back in 1905...has always been challenging. It is clean air up there, and that is what I enjoy the most. It is a boreal forest...which is the most primative type of wooded area in non-tropical locations. That means lots of moss and mold/mildew.
It tends to be cool also since it is an island and doesn't heat up with summer temps. The family tells the story that it was an escape at the time for hayfever issues. They used to go up there in Model T's and take their own chickens, etc. and live in huge tents. Over the years, cabins/homes were built by the cousins. Ours was finished in 1937. The island is small and mostly limestone rock... as you can see in my profile album pics.
It can be lovely and calming when the weather permits. And we like to joke that it builds "character", LOL. But it takes a certain kind of person to really enjoy it. I've done my best to make it more comfortable. When I joined this family 46 yrs ago it was spartan like a monastery, cold, and dank. The house is much nicer now
