Not that this applies to your specific case, but nerve damage can definitely cause abnormal hair growth. I developed Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome while in a cast following thumb surgery. When the cast came off, my forearm and hand, which normally have sparse, light-colored hair, were covered with thick, dark hair. It took many months for the nerve damage to heal and the hair gradually to go back to normal.
