Hard to say... it might be something short circuiting at the spinal cord level too. Reflexes never get to the brain, and they cycle back down to the limb instead.

There are also studies about "mirror" neurons. Some RSD therapies involve using a mirror reflecting the limb with the
pain, back so you can see it. Also phantom pain is treated this way too. The word "mirror" is used in other contexts also for pain and neurological issues, so do some searching on it. It is a hot topic today.

Lots of mysteries are still unexplained, though.
