I don't know if you know the story of those films. Superman Returns was a long time in the making (since the Superman IV debacle). The first 2 movies in that series were ok, despite the production complications of Superman II (I liked the 2007 Donner Cut better), but the series went drastically downhill from there. Returns was made as if Superman III & IV had never been made (not exactly a reboot, but an alternate timeline like the new Star Trek series—don't get me started.) There's a lot more history in-between, but I can't find a good (i.e. complete) version of it online.
