I trained our kitty to sit and stay. I did it to prevent spills at feeding time, when she would rush my hand and bump it, causing me to spill food all over. It only took a few days of repeating it. Now I just say "sit" or ask "What does a good kitty do?" and she sits down to be fed. It also comes in handy because we have to give her medication twice a day.
