Unhappy VP shunt malfunction?

I am new to this forum. My son is 21 and was shunted at 10 months. He has only had 2 revisions so he has been very lucky. He has had a recurrent problem and we do not know if he is having a malfunction. Starting in January he had a terrible headache and threw up a few times after a few hours he felt better. Felt relatively good for 4 weeks and then he same thing happened early February and the again early March. He sometimes has a headache in the morning and it feels better as the day goes on. Last week he had a headache most of the day. He does not know if it was a shunt headache.
My question is can this be a sign of a malfunction? It comes and goes and then seems to be really bad once a month and then subsides. What do you think?
