Many local anesthetics have preservatives in them and people can react negatively to them. Particularly if you are sensitive to bisulfites. I am in the dental field and have seen various reactions occur after the injection of a local anesthetic.
I am not saying this is what happened to you .... but sometimes the reaction is actually the patient hyperventilating or a panic attack that is mistaken for a drug reaction. Someone can have either of those things in varying degrees and sometimes they are surprised by it because they thought they were in control of the situation at the onset.
