I haven't read the article, but what you quote suggests to me that the same, or similar, symptoms and signs exist between diabetic neuropathies and neuropathies of some other causes. So docs need to be careful not to assume that it is diabetic when there might be some other cause that requires different treatment.
There are completely different treatments in some cases, and in many others there is not.
The key is generally to remove the cause in cases where that is possible (not possible with genetic neuropathies at this point), and support the body in its natural tendency to repair what is possible.
