Discuss this with dentist - - sounds like he did a full block. The extreme pain was from injecting too fast....it really. really hurts!!
My dentist will use locals as much as possible rather than the blocks for me. More injections, but it just effects the one tooth they're working on. Depending on the depth of the cavity, there can still be some pain. And locals won't cut it for a big job.
I'm quite scared of dentistry and seek out docs who are willing to tell me what they're doing and how stuff works...so I'm only repeating here what I have been told.
