There is stuff in milk crates outside near the door.

Go with the feeling. That's motivational stuff... good stuff. You will be making progress. Often it is hard to find a starting spot, but it sounds like your gut is suggesting things to you... like maybe those crates.

Or suggesting not to limit yourself... like maybe move the crates so you can access the door better?

I was really unhappy that she had taken with her a small cute print to canvas painting that was important to be because
six years ago I spent a lot of time getting the right piece for the right spot and until yesterday I thought the spot was perfect.

Oh! And she took something you bought???

Not nice. Unless you'd given it to her, I s'pose. Maybe you can find a duplicate of it, or something very similar, now that you know what works for the spot?

and figure out what to do with what used to be a low white bookcase that she used for her teapot.
. . . I do not know if it is best to cover the top of the book case or to talk myself into covering the tea stains with white paint.

I might just line it with white paper towels to buy myself time to decide without suffering the eyesore.
Have you considered contact paper? I used to cover boxes and such with a marble-patterned one... I've seen it with pinkish-beigish and grayish variations. The dominating color is white/light. I find it less tacky looking that the ones with stripes or rows of things, and you don't have to be too fastidious cutting/lining up.
Will you miss your office-mate?
