Janet, Neurontin can cause back pain, muscle pain and joint pains in small numbers of patients. It would be best to start decreasing your dosage and see if this improves. Since I have been on the Neurontin, I don't just have severe back pain, I have a roar in my head and such a ringing in my ears it leaves me in tears, I even called my Dr and asked if they could be side effects of the Neurontin and she told me NO
