I think distraction is what helps play a big part of how much or little pain / discomfort a person feels during an EMG (and other tests). I also was chatting a way during my test and really had no issue with it at all, except for one short muscle cramp in the calf. If you go into it anxious and all tensed up, you're bound to feel more pain than if you're relaxed.
