Even better is that you expect he will be good. What is not clear to me --- you say he is friendly but it is not clear to me that you have ever been in his "chair" so to speak. Anyway, whether he is new or new-ish is close enough I suppose.

Re: Random thoughts on language. I read yesterday somewhere that "ish" is becoming an almost accepted word all by itself.
