An MRI is often used to rule out rare but serious issues. They can sometimes find evidence of prior injury. An MRI/MRA can image vascular structures.
Sometimes, the MRI is just a fishing expedition. Fortunately, they are safe, no radiation like a CT Scan.
A functional MRI (fMRI) can be good at showing if the brain is getting blood flow to support different areas of the brain. They are usually used in research.
A diffusion tensored image MRI can be a good image.
