Default newbie doing research- c6/7 fusion

hi all, I'm new here and trying to do some research before making a decision on treatment. I have an MRI-confirmed spinal cord compression at my c6-7 caused by an osteophyte complex, and today the neurosurgeon recommended a fusion. I understand the logic of preventing further compression, and I'm optimistic that it will help relieve some of my symptoms, but I can't help but wonder if I will actually be any better off after the surgery. I sometimes experience excruciating pain that I have never found any help for other than time. I can deal with some numbness and tingling in my fingers, but I can't help but wonder if the pain will be any better post-op. I was rear-ended 7 years ago and have had horrible pain off and on since then. My initial MRI didn't show anything, but the latest one showed a moderate to severe compression at 6/7 and mild compression at 5/6. The arm numbness and pain, shoulder blade pain, and weakness are all relatively new and for all I know unrelated to the pain I had after the accident. I guess I am just looking for some sort of unbiased feedback from those that have been through it or found alternatives. I'm not big on trying any "new" therapy as side effects and adverse reactions for newer treatments can take so long to show up after they have been FDA-approved. I'm nervous about my spinal cord, and at 38 years old, want an amazing future for myself, my wife, and our 2 young kids. Thanks for tolerating my rambling, I look forward to any and all feedback.
