My question is will he have a hard time getting her removed as his payee and becoming his own payee again since he was not required to have a payee to began with and had her placed as a payee on his own.
SSA should not have made his mother his payee solely based on his request. If they did, that was a mistake. SSA is only supposed to appoint a payee when there is medical or lay evidence that a person cannot make good decisions with his/her money. My guess is that there was some sort of evidence that was used to appoint the payee. So yes, it will take much more than just a request for SSA to decide he no longer NEEDS any payee.
A Statement of Capability, SSA 787, could be completed by his treating physician and submitted with an application filed by himself.
Too late to change August though.
