Assuming/calling it an allergic reaction is not unreasonable if there are very few (or only one) incidents/reports.
You may hear back from the mfr. (I don't know the likelihood; MrsD prolly does), but I wouldn't be surprised/put out/suspicious either way.
IMO, the best way to CYA in a situation like this is to make/follow-up/verify any reports/documentation in writing.
