One may therefore speculate that increasing the endogenous GDNF expression would also contribute to fight the cognitive decline observed in PD patients. Additionally, it would be interesting to examine the effect of caloric restriction, physical exercise, enriched environment, herbal extracts or acupuncture, which increase GDNF expression in the nigrostriatal system and are neuroprotective in PD.
