As the summer vacation season heats up, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has issued important information for consumers who are traveling with medications.
"Millions of Americans will be traveling this summer and many will be taking their medicine with them," said Cynthia Brennan, Pharma.D , President of ASHP and Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. "That's why it's extremely important for people to know how to protect their medications and take them properly while away from home."
ASHP's tips for travelers include information to help consumers prepare for unexpected travel delays, comply with airport security regulations, and understand how to pack their medicines properly. The tips also include information on:
- Risks consumers might face if they purchase medications overseas,
- The best place to store medicine while on vacation, and
- How to obtain a prescription refill on the road.
A complete list of the tips is available at

For more than 60 years, ASHP has helped pharmacists who practice in hospitals and health systems improve medication use and enhance patient safety. The Society's 30,000 members include pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in inpatient, outpatient, home-care, and long-term-care settings, as well as pharmacy students.
