Although research is being done, at places like Canada's Dalhousie University, on new imaging technology, at present doctors have to rely on MRI or CT technology to see anything past the eardrum. Those images are, at best, crude and certainly not definitive.

For now, the only way to get a really good look at the ear is exploratory surgery.
