Hi, and welcome to NT!
I was put on Lyrica, for nerve pain, after an MVA. It did not work well for me.
I had better luck with Tegretol (carbamazepine). No medication is without side effects, but Tegretol has been around for ages, so it's long term impact is known.
As an older drug, available generically, it also has the advantage of being significantly cheaper. It's important to remember that newer replacement drugs aren't always superior. Drug companies push them because patent protection makes them far more profitable.
Nerve pain is difficult to treat and your husband may have to try a few medications, before finding the one that is most effective for him.
Should he come off Lyrica, it is important to taper down slowly, under medical supervision. Lyrica does create dependency.
In terms of the phantom limb pain, has your husband tried mirror box treatment?
All my best to you. It sounds like your family has been through a great deal.
