CMT is rare enough that doctors often miss it unless you mention a family connection. If there is a connection, if your father even has mild symptoms, it is worth mentioning. Many older people are quite stoic about symptoms and attribute them to arthritis and general aging. Your uncle certainly sounds like a CMT checklist.
Does your dad have any peripheral numbness or weakness? As Kitt said, it doesn't skip a generation and has to be inherited from someone with it, but it can be quite mild in one generation and severe in another. My father had a more average case, but my half sister and I have it quite severely.
So many of us here suffer for many years without a clear diagnosis that it is worth considering CMT IF the profile applies.
