I am in the process of that very thing! I want to not only be independent as possible, I figured out a way of never mowing again.
This solution might not be your cup of tea but it reminds me of the southwest.
Cover your lawn with lawn cloth then cover that with gravel. All my trees seem to like it and that takes care my weeds too.
It's a lot of work but worth it...
