do you have air conditioning? there are air filters that do help with th finer particles. they really help keep out pollen and dust. i use them. i have lots of glass and chrome.

i agree about taking out the carpet, if it an option for you. it's not just the carpet, but the padding under.

there are table top air purifers. that might help in the room you are in at the time.

dehumidifiers wick out the moisture from the air. they help cut down any mold problems.
