I've had surgery on l4/5 and l5/s1 twice. I'm still needing pain management some 20 odd years later. It's not as horrific as prior surgery but it was life changing and took a long time to recover.
I'm not suggesting its this way for everyone but please be aware that it sometimes doesn't go quite as planned. That's why they give you statistics as to recovery etc.
Take time to research your options and if you can, a very experienced neuro to guide you through the next steps.
