From my experience in my family with cancer the treatments were much worse than the disease IMO. The one family member who refused anything but palliative care wasted away and died (just like the others) but relatively free of pain. Her brother had the same type cancer and he suffered horribly from the so called side effects of chemo and in the end he lasted a shorter time than she did. IMO he died ,more from the "cure" rather than his disease. Dying is not always the worst that can happen.
