It may sound trite or impossible as a solution, but I have found mindfulness and distraction to be as effective as most medication, though tramadol is pretty effective for me. Sadly I found out how dependent I am on it this past month, but this condition is a really tough nut.

Yes mindfulness and distraction. When I play ukulele with my friend I usually am pain free except for my fingers because I'm loathe to stop and have my pains back. Fortunately I'm retired with enough money so I get to spend my days and evenings doing mindfulness and hypnosis for relaxation CDs. Sometimes up to 4 hours a day. It doesn't cure a thing so far but it helps greatly with symptoms and general anxiety and fear. Pain meds work well at times but it's often a life sentence with addiction and tolerance issues. I'm trying to minimize them.
