No. An X-ray or MRI will not help. Very few know how to read them to see the subtle problem. An Upper Cervical Chiro would have a specialized x-ray technique to see the problem. The subtle upper neck injury is not something a doctor will fix. They may be able to help you fix it by mobilizing C-1 and C-2 but you would need to be disciplined when you sleep or rest to maintain good neck posture.
If it is a problem when you wake up, it sounds like you are sleeping with your head and neck in a bad posture. Pillows that provide too much head lift are problematic. I sleep with minimal lift from my pillow.
