Apparently there are now more deaths among first responders from toxicity than occurred in the initial disaster. As noted, there are high rates of a variety of serious neurological disorders as well as cancer and respiratory illnesses. There was a serious attempt to cut federal funding for medical expenses, but a new bill passed in December. Estimated cost is $3.5 billion for 10 years.

I worry about residents: NYC had a rent subsidy program in place soon after 9/11....my young son felt so lucky to be able to move there...his first apartment. I really didn't think about the repercussions at the time.....he was a block away during the whole cleanup.
